I received so many wonderful comments, texts and messages about last Saturday’s blog that I decided to post a quick follow-up. (Read it here in case you missed it.)
I know I’m cheesy, but I thought you might like to see how we celebrated our Valentine’s Day – meaning Sunday, the 15th (plus, I’m really proud that we didn’t burn anything!).
I bought steak and crab cakes (our version of surf & turf) on Friday to fix for our Sunday dinner.

I love the way Whole Foods displays their products — I usually don’t buy much because I can find the same items for less at other stores, but visually, it is my favorite place to shop.

Sweet smells – walking by the display of roses.

The last two years I have wanted to buy one of their Valentine “sweetheart” steaks. This year I did.
What I didn’t realize until Sunday morning, because I hadn’t written the blog or figured it in my head yet, was that it would be the 35th anniversary of that first date that didn’t start out as a date. (That made me glad I had bought the steak and crab cakes. Thirty-five is a long time.) So, instead of dinner out after church which is our normal custom, we went home and grilled.

Actually, Larry grilled the steak.
I would have overcooked it.

We are in the middle of a house remodel so I had to pull chairs from another room. I sat the table with mixed vintage dishware. (I’m kind of a dish hoarder.)

I’m a Goodwill shopper — that’s how I support my mismatch dish hobby.
Here is what I used:
Service Plate/Charger – Homer Laughlin, restaurant (vintage unknown)
Dinner Plate – Harkerware, Blue Mist (1950s)
Salad Plate — Noritake Ambience, Java Blue (not old, just a thrift find, 2005-2014)
Cereal Bowl – Ironstone, unmarked (1970s)
Oval Au Gratin/Potato Baker – Ironstone, unmarked (1980s)
Crystal Water Goblet – Fostoria, Heritage (1979-1982)
The old table is a two-board pine, circa 1860 — the first piece of furniture we bought after we got married.
Here was our Menu:
Crackers with Feta-Salsa Mixed Greens with sweet peppers & vinaigrette Ribeye steaks (we could eat only half of a half) Crab cakes Baked potatoes Red pears & Chocolate (sweetened with Stevia)It was yummy.
We also saw the movie “Old-Fashioned.” (Kinda fits, doesn’t it?) It’s a slow-moving but sweet story about grace and mercy. We loved the final message.
Hope you enjoyed my ramble. We had a great day.
